Esters III Completes Bachelor’s Degree, Focusing On Final Season at Tech
MICHAEL SUDHALTER

Like many elementary and middle school football players in the 2010s, Charles Esters III dreamed of playing football for head coach Joey McGuire.

Those aspirations were on hold when McGuire left Cedar Hill in 2016 to accept an assistant coach position at Baylor University.

Esters III, a Cedar Hill High School Class of 2021 Graduate, did everything he could to build upon the legacy that McGuire created in Longhorn Nation.

He was a freshman in the fall of 2017 and emerged as an All-State linebacker as a senior in 2020. Instead of signing with Baylor, Esters III opted for Texas Tech, then coached by Matt Wells.

Little did Esters III know that McGuire would succeed Wells as the Red Raiders head coach the following year.

“It’s been really fun – going from a 6-6 program to a ranked team,” Esters III said. “We have people who really want to win. It’s really cool to be around. Coach McGuire has a lot of energy, knows what he’s doing, and he’s been really successful.”

Esters III, an outside linebacker who has 46 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble at Tech, is a fifth-year senior who earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management last spring. He’s currently working on a Master’s Degree in Sport Management.

Tech (4-0) is ranked 12th nationally and will visit Houston next Saturday.

During his time in Lubbock, Esters III has been part of four teams that have reached bowl games, including victories in the Texas Bowl, Independence Bowl, and Liberty Bowl.

Esters III hopes to own a business someday. He credits his time in Cedar Hill ISD with preparing him academically and athletically at Texas Tech.

“The linemen and the mental aspect of football are different at the college level,” Esters III said. “In high school, you won’t go against 6-foot-6 lineman every day.”

Esters III was a member of the 2020 UIL Class 6A, Division II State Runner-Up Team and stays in touch with teammates from that year – “the COVID Season”, including former Tech teammate Harvey Dyson III, who’s now at Tulane, and Rice’s Matthew Aribisala.
