McKinney Feels Truly Connected to Cedar Hill ISD
MICHAEL SUDHALTER

With two decades at Cedar Hill High School, Michael McKinney has more longevity on campus than almost all of his colleagues.

Last week prior to the season-opening football game against Midlothian, McKinney was recognized as the Cedar Hill ISD Teacher of the Week, sponsored by Frost Bank. McKinney, a Chemistry teacher, was selected for the honor by CHHS senior Desman Manuel, the CHHS Scholar Athletic of the Week.

“I enjoy bringing my love of science and nature into the classroom,” McKinney said. “Teaching scholars to slow down and observe the world around them is a big goal of mine each year. We have great scholars who have amazing talents. I love attending athletic events, fine arts performances, and other extracurriculars. I also enjoy hearing from alumni. Some of them have kept in touch throughout the years, and it is always fun to hear about what they are doing.”

McKinney is also a sponsor for the CHHS National Honor Society and helps lead their annual Blood Drive.

McKinney, who grew up in the Chicago suburbs and graduated from college in Indiana, was hired on the day before in 2006. He had the opportunity to get an up-close view for all three of Cedar Hill Football’s State Championships in 2006, 2013, and 2014.

His four sons, all of whom attend CHISD, were too young to remember when the Longhorns won their most recent state title.

McKinney said being a CHISD parent is just as special as being an educator in the District. He’s had an opportunity to experience the District through various campuses and grade levels.

“Over the years, our boys have had so many teachers and staff pour into them and encourage them to be great,” McKinney said. “The people involved in their education truly care about them. Also, we love the size of the District. There are so many opportunities available. Our boys have been able to play in the orchestra, be in a variety of after school clubs, and even start their own clubs. CHISD provides families a well-rounded education and we love that!”
