Plummer Counselor Honored to Earn Mental Health Award
MICHAEL SUDHALTER

Since arriving at Plummer Elementary School in 2023, Tamika Biggers has strived to make mental health a priority.

She was recently honored as one of two Cedar Hill ISD counselors to earn the Lenny Learning K-12 Mental Health Leadership Award, along with Lake Ridge’s Olivia Rutledge.

Biggers and Rutledge have been collaborating on creating a mental health curriculum for the district.

“Being recognized for my work in mental health leadership means so much to me—both personally and professionally,” Biggers said. “This honor is deeply personal because it reflects the journey I’ve been on, not just to support others, but to care for my own mental health along the way. There was a time when life’s challenges and past trauma weighed heavily on me, threatening to take over my thoughts and daily life. But I made a choice—to take control, to heal, and to turn my pain into purpose. That decision changed everything.”

Biggers, who grew up in Dallas and earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at East Texas A&M University in Commerce, has been an educator for 13 years, including seven years as a school counselor.

“I always knew I wanted to go into counseling,” Biggers said. “I’ve had lots of different types of mentors and dealt with a lot of trauma. Our elementary years are what really what shape us. I’m planting seeds for students. I want to be the support network that I needed during my school years. I don’t want surface level support for these kids.”
